While their filing title might lead one to believe the content is only for teenagers, the Young Adult genre is anything but. Over the years, content stemming from the YA grouping has tackled incredibly important issues not just for folks under a certain age, but for those of us well beyond 21. On May 5, author Soman Chainani will make his comeback to the scene with the arrival of the novel Young World. Politically centered with strong characters driving the narrative and proving that one voice can change the world — whether it means to or not — the book promises to continue to capture the attention of readers who previously made Chainani a New York Times bestseller. Today, ahead of the novel’s release, Collider is thrilled to exclusively unveil a first listen for our readers who are eager to immerse themselves in the writer’s new world ahead of the official release.

In Chainani’s follow-up to his beloved The School for Good and Evil series, readers and listeners will be thrown into a version of America that finds itself on the edge of complete destruction. The younger generation has completely given up on their leaders, but a high school senior named Benton Young sees the opportunity to shift the country’s future. Actually, he sees the potential to impress the girl he has a crush on, but his action of publishing an online video asking everyone to write him in for President takes off like wildfire and eventually leads to him sitting in the Oval Office. Kicking off a revolution, Benton’s historic win ignites the spark that drives other youths from around the globe to take over their governments and build a world that reflects their morals and hopes. But, this version of utopia only lasts for a fleeting second when, at the group’s first meeting in Sweden, one of their own is murdered and Benton appears to be the person responsible.

Your answers point to the world your instincts were built for. This is the universe your temperament, your survival instincts, and your particular brand of stubbornness were made for.

You took the red pill a long time ago — probably before anyone offered it to you. You’re a systems thinker who can’t help but notice the seams in things.

The wasteland doesn’t reward the clever or the well-connected — it rewards those who are hard to kill and harder to break. That’s you.

You’d survive here because you know how to exist in moral grey areas without losing yourself completely.

Arrakis is the most hostile environment in the known universe — and you are precisely the kind of person it rewards.

The galaxy far, far away is vast, loud, and in a constant state of violent political upheaval — and you wouldn’t have it any other way.

Our first listen starts at the very beginning of *Young World, *when Benton wants nothing more than to impress his classmate, who he refers to as “The One.” His words come in the form of a journal meant for the eyes of his AP government teacher, Miss Escobedo, to whom he not only confesses his crush on his peer, but also informs the reader about all the horrible, world-ending things going on around him. We also learn about the video he posted to win the girl over and how it’s taken off. The 20-minute sneak peek gives listeners just enough to keep them hanging on until the title’s full drop next month.

Young World arrives on shelves and in audio form on May 5. Check out our first listen above.
