Witch Hat Atelier isn’t even halfway through its run, but it’s already made a name for itself as Crunchyroll’s biggest fantasy anime of the year; not only does it have a uniquely classical take on the fantasy genre that’s a perfect refresher from isekai, but it tells that story with an incredibly likeable cast of characters and some of the most gorgeously detailed animation a person can ask for, making every episode nothing but a delight to watch.

Witch Hat Atelier is already far and away the best anime of spring 2026, but unfortunately, it’s already being met with controversy. Anytime a series blows up in popularity, as Witch Hat Atelier does, some people try to bring it down simply because it’s popular; it would be one thing if that’s all it was, but unfortunately, the major controversy surrounding Witch Hat Atelier is far worse, both because of how ridiculous it is and because of how generally disgusting it is that the anime community would do this.

That should have been an innocuous response, but the reactions to it said anything but. Despite Shirahama simply speaking about how many women work in anonymity, many people somehow twisted that into her saying that she was the first female mangaka to find success; then, after that discourse settled in, people used the fact that she was interviewed by UNESCO to accuse Witch Hat Atelier of being an industry plant and a “leftist psyop” to spread “woke nonsense” to fans, all of which couldn’t be more absurd.

Allegedly, the discourse for the *Witch Hat Atelier *anime stems from Kodansha’s association with the United Nations after their past attempts to enforce censorship on manga, but for anyone active on social media, that’s nothing but an excuse. Ever since the UNESCO interview came out, the hate for Witch Hat Atelier has been about the manga and the author having progressive leanings at worst, and people simply hating on it for being popular at best, and in either case, it’s completely unwarranted and a shameful display from the anime community.

The controversy surrounding Witch Hat Atelier is nothing short of atrocious, and unfortunately, it perfectly encapsulates everything wrong with fandom culture. Not only are people far too quick to judge media based on what other people are saying without looking into things themselves, but when they try to push an agenda, especially if it’s a negative one, they’ll always try to twist the facts in the worst way possible to sell their slander. It’s a practice that’s been going on for ages, and Witch Hat Atelier is the latest victim.

Anime Officially Has A New Big 3, And They’re All 10/10 Series Every Fan Needs To Watch ](/anime-new-big-3-fantasy-frieren-delicious-dungeon-witch-hat-atelier/)

Anime fans are always looking for the next “Big 3” of anime, and they might have finally found it in a trio of 10/10 modern fantasy hits.

Witch Hat Atelier is amazing, not just for the gorgeous visuals of the anime and manga, but because of how Kamome Shirahama can create a world where people are expected to love one another and be free to be themselves, regardless of race, gender, or sexuality, yet people would try to twist that into something negative because of politics or to prop up some other anime. It’s nothing but a sad look into the worst of the anime community, but hopefully, it won’t be enough to stop Witch Hat Atelier from earning the respect it deserves on Crunchyroll.

***Witch Hat Atelier ***releases new episodes Mondays on Crunchyroll.
