After a major cast shakeup, Ransom Canyon season 2’s release date and new images have been revealed.
Season 1 of the Netflix western drama series follows the Kirkland, Collins, and Fuller families as they vie for control of land in the Texas Hill Country. Despite playing the prominent father and son duo Davis and Reid Collins in season 1, it was reported in September that Eion Macken and Andrew Liner would not be returning with Ransom Canyon season 2’s cast.
Now, Netflix has announced that Ransom Canyon season 2 will debut on July 23. The new season will feature eight episodes, two fewer than the 10 episodes in the previous season. First-look images have also been released, which showcase Staten Kirkland (Josh Duhamel), Quinn O’Grady (Minka Kelly), Lauren Brigman (Lizzy Greene), Lucas Russell (Garrett Wareing), and other key characters. Check out the images below:
Season 2 will have a noticeable time jump as it begins six months after Ransom Canyon season 1’s ending. After losing his position as trustee of his family’s Double K Ranch, Staten is working hard to reclaim his legacy, and Quinn is wrestling with whether she wants to be in New York City or the small town she previously tried to leave behind. Staten and Quinn’s relationship will be put to the test as they explore if they can truly be together and as their love story continues to bring new complications.
The story is based on Jodi Thomas’ Ransom Canyon books, with April Blair serving as the show’s creator, showrunner, and executive producer. Duhamel and Kelly are also executive producers, and along with Greene and Wareing, season 2’s cast features Jack Schumacher, Marianly Tejada, Casey W. Johnson, Patricia Clarkson, Ben Robson, Heidi Engerman, Tatanka Means, Justin Johnson Cortez, Philip Winchester, Jennifer Ens, Brett Cullen, and Niko Guardado.
While the series performed well on Netflix, it split critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes as per the 45% Tomatometer score and 73% audience score. *ScreenRant’*s Ransom Canyon season 1 review was more favorable, with Greg MacArthur giving it a rating of 8 out of 10 stars and declaring that the show “executes its simple premise at a high level, balancing at least a dozen great characters that will win audiences over with their storybook earnestness and Southern charm.”
As a western about families fighting to control land, Ransom Canyon has naturally drawn comparisons to Yellowstone, the hit Taylor Sheridan series that helped revive the genre and launch a successful franchise. MacArthur argues in his review that the Netflix series is more than a *Yellowstone *copycat, though, with the romance, murder mystery, and family politics helping the show forge its own unique and worthy identity.
Since there are eight books in Thomas’ Ransom Canyon series, there will still be plenty of source material to pull from after season 2. This bodes well for the show being renewed for a third season, which will likely happen if there is high viewership again. Season 2 also has the opportunity to win over more critics this time, a feat that may be more feasible now that the show is a known quantity and won’t be viewed as much as yet another Yellowstone.
Ransom Canyon season 2 comes to Netflix on July 23.
