Monarch of the Glen is heading back to the Scottish Highlands, and honestly, there are worse places to stage a family crisis. Just bring an umbrella and a sense of humor. PBS MASTERPIECE has announced a new take on the beloved series, which will return as a six-episode drama revolving around legacy, love, survival, and the particular kind of chaos that only comes from inheriting a crumbling estate with a giant financial problem attached. Production and filming are set to take place in Scotland and Northern Ireland later this year.

PBS MASTERPIECE said of the new series, “When high-flying London lawyer Isla Campbell finds herself back at her family’s crumbling Highland estate for her estranged father’s funeral, she expects to be gone in days. Instead, she discovers she has inherited a million-pound debt, a bank closing in, and a brother who refuses to let go of their ancestral home. Under the same roof for the first time in years, brother and sister will have to find a way to save the struggling estate before time runs out and they lose it for good.” The synopsis continues:

“The show will transport us to the stunning Scottish Highlands while introducing a rich ensemble of unforgettable new characters. This family saga promises heart, humor, and romance – bound together by breathtaking landscapes, roaring hearths, and the people who call this wild corner of the world home.”

The reimagining is created, written, and executive produced by Jeremy Brock (A Very Royal Scandal, The Last King of Scotland, Mrs Brown), alongside writer Stephen Greenhorn (Sunshine on Leith, Dept. Q, River City). **Tom Vaughan **(Doctor Foster, Victoria) will direct and executive-produce.

Your answers point to the world your instincts were built for. This is the universe your temperament, your survival instincts, and your particular brand of stubbornness were made for.

You took the red pill a long time ago — probably before anyone offered it to you. You’re a systems thinker who can’t help but notice the seams in things.

The wasteland doesn’t reward the clever or the well-connected — it rewards those who are hard to kill and harder to break. That’s you.

You’d survive here because you know how to exist in moral grey areas without losing yourself completely.

Arrakis is the most hostile environment in the known universe — and you are precisely the kind of person it rewards.

The galaxy far, far away is vast, loud, and in a constant state of violent political upheaval — and you wouldn’t have it any other way.

Brock said he jumped at the chance to bring Monarch of the Glen back, especially with a story built around family, belonging, and the need for something a little hopeful right now. “When I was offered the chance to re-imagine Monarch of the Glen, I leapt at it. I’m hugely excited by the opportunity to tell a story of family life and finding your place in our hectic world — one that celebrates the warmth, humor, and eccentricities of a special community, with both optimism and authenticity. Hope and joy are a currency in short supply right now, and the Highlands — one of the most magical places on Earth — felt like exactly the right home for them.”

The producers are Alex Boyd (How to Get to Heaven from Belfast) and Robert Bernstein and Douglas Rae (The Trial of Christine Keeler, The Great Escaper, Fleming), with Rob Darnell and Adam Duncan executive producing for Ecosse Films. Susanne Simpson executive produces for PBS MASTERPIECE.

Bernstein said the original series still means a great deal to the team at Ecosse Films, and described the new version as a way to bring the story to another generation. “Monarch of the Glen holds a very special place in our hearts, and we are absolutely thrilled to be bringing this beloved show to the next generation of viewers. We are delighted to have a writer of Jeremy Brock’s extraordinary calibre at the helm of the series and the outstandingly talented team that is boarding the project. At a time when family and community feel more important than ever, we can’t wait to welcome our audience back to the Highlands to fall in love with Monarch of the Glen all over again.”

The new Monarch of the Glen will air on 5 in the U.K. and PBS MASTERPIECE in the U.S.
