Oh god, prepare for more lava chickens and chicken jockeys and Steve and oh no, it’s happening again. Production has officially begun on the sequel to 2025’s record-breaking box office success and the third-largest opening of all time. After last year’s absurdly huge trip into the Overworld, we’re about to get more, and none of us are ready for this.

Kirsten Dunst (Spider-Man, The Power of the Dog) has confirmed that filming is underway on A Minecraft Movie 2, sharing a photo from set featuring directors chairs bearing her name and that of her co-star, up-and-coming indie star Jack Black (School of Rock, The Super Mario Bros. Movie). The pic shows the characters’ names, Alex and Steve (oh no, not Steve), printed in block letters on the chairs, with Dunst captioning the post, “It has begun…..” The Oscar-nominated actress joined the sequel earlier this year as Alex, who’s a major character from the game and one teased by the first movie’s end credits.

Dunst had previously joked that she was seeking a role in the sequel and it wasn’t exactly for artistic reasons, which was admirably honest and funny, saying, “My kids loved it. And I was like, I need to make a movie where I don’t lose money.”

The remainder of the cast includes Jason Momoa (Aquaman, Dune) as Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple, Peacemaker) as Dawn, Matt Berry (What We Do in the Shadows, Toast of London) as Malgosha, and **Jennifer Coolidge **(The White Lotus, Legally Blonde) as Marlene. Returning director Jared Hess is back to helm the sequel, working from a script by Hess and Chris Galletta.

Your answers point to the world your instincts were built for. This is the universe your temperament, your survival instincts, and your particular brand of stubbornness were made for.

You took the red pill a long time ago — probably before anyone offered it to you. You’re a systems thinker who can’t help but notice the seams in things.

The wasteland doesn’t reward the clever or the well-connected — it rewards those who are hard to kill and harder to break. That’s you.

You’d survive here because you know how to exist in moral grey areas without losing yourself completely.

Arrakis is the most hostile environment in the known universe — and you are precisely the kind of person it rewards.

The galaxy far, far away is vast, loud, and in a constant state of violent political upheaval — and you wouldn’t have it any other way.

A Minecraft Movie made an utterly nonsensical amount of money — around $961 million worldwide. Now, that may have absolutely baffled some of Hollywood, particularly the older generation, but they had clearly underestimated — and Warner Bros. had correctly estimated — the wide appeal the game has around the world. After all, it can be played in any language because of its simplistic nature, and the box office numbers reflect its global appeal. The breakdown is roughly $424.1 million domestic and $537.1 million internationally, against a reported $150 million production budget. That means it made about 6.4 times its budget globally. It also opened huge, with $162.8 million domestically and around $313 million worldwide in its first weekend, breaking records for a video game movie opening. Lord knows why they would be rushing a sequel.

A Minecraft Movie 2 is set to hit theaters on July 23, 2027.
