*Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag *is making a grand return with the release of Black Flag Resynced, a souped-up version of the original game with shiny new graphics and plenty of gameplay tweaks. It also brings back the original actor behind Edward Kenway, Matt Ryan, who’s done some new line recordings and motion capture for Resynced.

At a *Black Flag Resynced *preview event, *Screen Rant *had the opportunity to talk with Matt Ryan about *Black Flag Resynced *and the journey of playing Edward Kenway. Ryan had plenty of passionate words about the subject, especially on the topic of playing Kenway in future follow-ups to Black Flag.

Asked if he would be interested in returning as Kenway in the future, Ryan responded with a pretty definitive yes. Not only does he “love this character,” but he’s also interested in where the story goes after the game.

“I know that there’s been the novel that’s been writen and the comic books, and what happens to Edward after *Black Flag *is intriguing to me as well.” - Matt Ryan

For Ryan, returning to the role of Kenway after having a life journey of his own was especially meaningful. “T**hese weird little parallels” exist between his life and Kenway’s, and “there’s a little bit more depth that [Ryan has] as a human being” after the intervening years. “To see where he goes afterwards,” Ryan concludes, “f**ing hell, I wanna see it*. And will I play it? Yeah, of course, I wanna play it.”

Later in the interview, Ryan circled back around to the topic. Speaking about the differences of playing Kenway after all this time, Ryan started with the mechanical changes — a deeper voice, for example — before taking a more philosophical turn.

“Going back to what you were saying about the story of Edward after this part of his life in Black Flag, there’s a weight to me now that would be interesting to play in another part of the story, just as an actor and as a fan of this character.”

There’s little doubt that plenty of fans feel the same way, with* Black Flag *and Ryan’s performance as Kenway remaining particular favorites among the community at large. If there’s ever been a time for a sequel, it’s now, as *Black Flag Resynced *could easily set the stage for the story to continue.

Even if Edward Kenway’s story ends here, though, *Resynced *should provide some new treasures for fans to enjoy. Ryan calls both the original script for *Black Flag *and the new material “a gift,” offering a specific shout-out to the talents of writer Darby McDevitt. It won’t be long now until fans can check things out for themselves, as *Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced *is set to launch on July 9, 2026.
