***Grey’s Anatomy ***is taking on Texas! A new spin-off of the hit NBC series has been announced with Shonda Rhimes and **Meg Marinis **serving as co-creators on the show. **Ellen Pompeo, **who has played Meredith Grey on the hit series for the last 21 years will executive produce the new show that takes us to Western Texas with a new medical center, which is a first for the *Grey’s Anatomy *world and its subsequent spin-off shows. This is the first time that the franchise is bringing a new medical center into the fold instead of connecting characters to Seattle’s Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.
The new drama has been described as “edgy” and will place the medical center in the middle of a rural area of Texas, where it is your last chance to get care before the open wasteland of the second biggest state. This series is not going to feature a series regular from *Grey’s Anatomy *and is going to be a completely new world for the franchise. There is potential for connecting characters with rumors surrounding legacy characters being involved but as of this writing, it has not been announced whether or not any known *Grey’s *characters will make the move to Texas.
Marinis, who is currently the showrunner of Grey’s Anatomy, shared a statement on the new series. “I am incredibly excited to expand the *Grey’s Anatomy *universe,” Marinis said. “This opportunity will bring new characters and stories to life that will embody the same heart, emotion and connection audiences have loved from Grey’s for more than two decades — all set in my home state of Texas. I am so grateful to Shonda Rhimes for creating this dynamic world and feel so fortunate that I get to be a part of it.”

So while the new show isn’t set on the West Coast and might not have a character from *Grey’s Anatomy *on it, it is part of the larger extended universe that Rhimes and company have already built. But hey, Seattle and Texas are very different places so it is going to be exciting!
