Disney+ has expanded the Star Wars franchise exponentially in recent years with various TV shows, but the most important among them remains a three-season space Western which debuted in November 2019. Now, this series is returning to our screens in a different form, as its protagonists take on their first cinematic adventure.
More than three years after The Mandalorian made its final television bow, Din Djarin and Din Grogu are moving to the big screen for The Mandalorian and Grogu. While the jury is still out on whether or not this film lives up to the series which preceded it, there’s no question that these beloved characters deserve this additional story.
Aside from being the first live-action TV series in franchise history, The Mandalorian is one of the best Star Wars shows of any kind, which transposes the Western trope of a gunslinging outlaw to a galaxy far, far away. The series proves that there’s more to George Lucas’ legendary storyworld than just the Skywalker saga, as great as it is.
Although not everything about The Mandalorian and Grogu is going down as well as the Disney+ TV show that spawned it, the winning combination of Pedro Pascal’s titular warrior and his diminutive combination remains as irresistible as ever. The Mandoverse will never stop being one of the highlights of the Star Wars franchise.
In bringing Din Djarin back to the screen, Star Wars is giving fans another chance to enjoy one of its most iconic characters, not only of recent years, but of the entire franchise. His stint as the mercurial protagonist of a key story cycle set between movie trilogies is defined by moments of exceptional fighting prowess alongside unexpected personal growth.
From that spectacular introductory scene at the beginning of The Mandalorian season 1, to the touching bond he develops with adopted son Grogu, Djarin has one of the best arcs of any Star Wars character. He’s at once an enigmatic antihero, a fearsome killer for hire, and a surrogate father and mentor.
Din Djarin isn’t the only Mandalorian in Star Wars, but he’s undoubtedly the best, and has added a whole new dimension to the lore of the franchise. Before he got his own Disney+ series, Mandalorians appeared as secondary figures in various media, without much depth to their individual characterizations. Now, they rival the popularity of Jedis among Star Wars fans.
Whatever we make of The Mandalorian and Grogu as a work of cinema in its own right, the movie warrants credit for its celebration of an all-time great sci-fi character on the big screen. What’s more, the father-son dynamic between Din Djarin and Grogu is one of the most powerfully emotive storylines in any Star Wars release.
Besides introducing us to a character of rare brilliance, The Mandalorian is credited with saving the Star Wars franchise from a future of recycled plot arcs and one-dimensional heroes. The series both forged a new path for the franchise to continue in live action, and brought it into the age of prestige television.
Before its release, Star Wars TV shows had been the preserve of animation. The Mandalorian proved that live-action stories within the franchise’s universe could work just as well, if not even better. What’s more, it took things in a fresh direction stylistically from the operatic tone of the Skywalker saga, by placing itself in the tradition of space Westerns.
Without The Mandalorian, there might not be much left of the Star Wars universe to look forward to in live action. The anticipation ahead of The Mandalorian and Grogu’s release is testament to how significant this landmark Disney+ release was to the franchise.
