Summertime is the ideal time to stay indoors, right? It’s far too hot to do anything else. The best thing to do is put the air conditioning on and jump in a spaceship to go find some unobtanium. Maybe go swimming with some gigantic space whales, and try not to get shot by some insane fire-loving cultists. Yes, folks, after another massive theatrical run, the latest trip to Pandora is finally getting ready to land on streaming.
Avatar: Fire and Ash will begin streaming on Disney+ on June 24. The release date was announced last month during Disney’s Upfront presentation in New York, with Sigourney Weaver revealing the news onstage. The third film in the franchise became another box office juggernaut for Cameron, grossing **over $1 billion worldwide **after opening in theaters on December 10 last year, which makes Fire and Ash the third straight Avatar movie to clear the billion-dollar mark. It’s probably fair at this point to label the franchise as one of the most dependable global box office machines in movie history.
The cast includes Sam Worthington (Clash of the Titans) as Jake Sully, Zoe Saldaña (Guardians of the Galaxy) as Neytiri, Stephen Lang (Don’t Breathe) as Miles Quaritch, Kate Winslet (The Reader) as Ronal, Oona Chaplin (Game of Thrones) as Varang, Bailey Bass (Interview with the Vampire) as Tsireya, and David Thewlis (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) as Peylak.

Cameron keeps things very close to the chest, which is funny given how enormously successful these movies are. Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, who plays Tuk in the franchise, revealed at the Saturn Awards earlier this year that only a small portion of Avatar 4 has been filmed so far. That footage comes before the movie’s long-discussed time jump, which Bliss says will open up the story in a big way. She said:
“We filmed like a first little section of it, and that’s before this epic time jump, which is gonna really expand this story from the characters, plans, ecosystems of Pandora, and it’s like… We barely touched the tip of the iceberg for what we know about this world, and these characters, and how deep they can go.”
Bliss also offered a minor production update, making it clear that Avatar 4 is still very much in the early stages of what has actually been shot. “So, I really hope we get to continue it. But yeah, we filmed a wee, little bit, and I do remember it well. Actually, even though I was nine, because it was a time jump type thing… I am now 16. Isn’t that kind of insane?”
