2026 has been full of ups and downs for Star Wars fans, who were treated to the highest-rated project in franchise history with Maul — Shadow Lord. There was never any doubt in Disney and Lucasfilm that the show was going to be a smash hit, which was proven when it was renewed for Season 2 before a single episode hit the air. The first Star Wars movie since 2019, The Mandalorian and Grogu, unfortunately, didn’t find the same success as the first Disney+ show of the year. The film is expected to be the lowest-grossing Star Wars movie in franchise history by the end of its run, even lower than Solo: A Star Wars Story. However, the bad news for Star Wars fans dates back to 2025, when it was announced that Disney cancelled The Hunt for Ben Solo movie starring Adam Driver and directed by Steven Soderbergh.
Fans have spent the better part of this year campaigning for Disney and Lucasfilm to get the movie back on track, but there have been no updates yet to allude to the movie getting back on track to ever being released. However, Star Wars is officially bringing back Kylo Ren for a new release, Star Wars: The Fall of Kylo Ren, which arrives next month on August 12. Charles Soule wrote the new comic with art from Will Sliney, with Phil Noto working on the primary cover and virgin variant cover, and Luke Ross creating the secondary variant cover. This new five-issue comic series takes place after the events of ***The Last Jedi ***and leads directly into The Rise of Skywalker, showing Kylo Ren cutting through the schemes of Generals Hux and Pryde while ushering in a new era of power in the First Order. During her exit interview, when she handed over the Lucasfilm President role to Dave Filoni, Kathleen Kennedy shared that The Hunt for Ben Solo was not fully cancelled, but just on the back burner. Reports indicated that Disney and Lucasfilm executives agreed to put the movie on ice as they didn’t think fans would understand how Kylo Ren could have survived the events of The Rise of Skywalker. This wouldn’t be the most far-fetched thing Star Wars fans were asked to believe — most would agree that title belongs to Palpatine “somehow” returning in Episode 9 after being thrown to his death by Darth Vader in Return of the Jedi.
