Warning: Major SPOILERS lie ahead for Evil Dead Burn!***Evil Dead Burn ***has left viewers reeling after its post-credits scenes, and co-writer/director Sébastien Vaniček has some insight into the goal behind them.

The sixth chapter of the Sam Raimi-created franchise centers on the Price family, who have gathered for a funeral along with in-law Alice, for the funeral for the latter’s husband after his sudden death, only for the family’s history with the Deadite curse to begin transforming everyone into the undead fiends. Led by Dune: Part Two’s Souheila Yacoub, *Evil Dead Burn *has garnered generally favorable reviews from critics, currently sitting with a 77% “Certified Fresh” approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Ahead of the film’s release, ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan interviewed Sébastien Vaniček to discuss Evil Dead Burn. When asked about the film’s post-credits scenes, which not only reveal one Deadite-possessed member of the Price family survived, but also feature the return of another *Evil Dead Rise *character, the co-writer/director shared that part of the thought process behind both scenes was wanting to leave audiences “physically drained” by the time everything is over.

Vaniček went on to explain his hopes for audiences to “talk about” the franchise-changing post-credits scenes, or at the very least take “a moment of silence” to process everything they’ve experienced, calling it the “whole goal” of his vision for Evil Dead Burn:

Sébastien Vaniček: Just breathe. Just take some fresh air. That’s the whole goal of the movie: to put their head in the movie and not let them breathe for a long time. And then when they’re out, it’s over.

After having put audiences through the wringer in watching the household-based tortures of the Price family, Vaniček certainly delivered a few big surprises with both of Evil Dead Burn’s post-credits scenes. The first sees Maude Davey’s Polly, who once worked with Professor Knowby before he found the first main Book of the Dead, still under the Deadite possession and successfully having escaped the house, passing on the curse to a motorist who finds her crawling away.

The second *Evil Dead Burn *post-credits scene took things even further by showing the daughter of the cremator hired to deal with the body of George Pullar’s Will back in the crematorium, where the unclaimed ashes of Ellie Bixler sit after Evil Dead Rise’s ending. Alyssa Sutherland subsequently makes a surprise cameo as her fan-favorite character, shown still under the Deadite possession and killing the cremator’s daughter.

Both *Evil Dead Burn *post-credits scenes hold a lot of weight for the future of the long-running horror franchise. The one involving Polly seems primed to set up another modern-day installment in the series dealing with the fallout of her passing on the Deadite possession to the motorist that tries to help her. It would follow the trend the new film established, as its opening sequence directly picked up from the bookended story in Rise.

Additionally, Sutherland’s return as Ellie not only opens the door for her to appear in a future installment, but it also changes the way the Deadite curse could be explored in the *Evil Dead *franchise. Though plenty of the possessed have returned from their apparent initial deaths, none have revived from their bodies being completely destroyed, particularly to the extent of Ellie as Rise’s ending saw her pushed into a wood chipper, while *Burn *established enough remains were found to cremate them.

Considering both the 2023 film and ***Evil Dead Burn ***feature other versions of the Book of the Dead, there is a very real possibility that they feature incantations to allow those previously killed while under Deadite possession to return. This could not only pave the way for many other fan-favorite characters to return in future installments, but also raise the stakes for others facing the undead in trying to find a way to put them down for good.
