Warning! The following article contains mild SPOILERS for The Amazing Spider-Man #32 (LGY #996).It’s official, whether readers like it or not: Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson aren’t getting back together in mainline Spider-Man comic books, and maybe they never will. Even with Paul Rabin dead, Peter and MJ have drifted apart and are both content to be in one another’s lives as platonic friends as they go on their separate journeys, especially with MJ being the All-New Venom and an important character in the upcoming Queen in Black crossover event.

Meanwhile, debuting 21 issues ago in Joe Kelly and Pepe Larraz’s The Amazing Spider-Man run, Raelith couldn’t have come into Peter’s life at a better time (she first appears in #11, but withdraws her cloak and reveals herself as Raelith of the Wretched in #13). Every encounter with Raelith has been either poignant or playful, and issue #32 has only been the latest example of how heartwarming Raelith and Peter’s friendship is, as well as how fantastic they could be as lovers.

Raelith is a gorgeous alien warrior, but she’s also stalwart, selfless, and sympathetic. Just last issue, Raelith endured what was surely agonizing when she leaped between Spider-Man and Plague RX and struck with the pain that the villain had previously absorbed:

Pain? Yes… but it’s my friend’s pain. I can carry it until he is ready to carry it by himself.

There is a wonderful foundation for what could be a genuinely great romance with Raelith in that they’ve allowed themselves to become close friends and companions first. Still, they’re picturesque as a couple, and it wouldn’t be a stretch to see Raelith and Peter dating, resting on him while in an ice cream-induced coma.

It’s fairly bewildering that Raelith, Glitch, and Symbie have stuck around for as long as they have. Glitch, in particular, isn’t serving much of a role as a supporting character or a purpose on Earth (it is also unlikely that Peter will wear him as The Amazing Spider-Man’s Technarachnid suit again).

Issue #32 foreshadows that Raelith, Glitch, and Symbie might not be there for much longer, with Glitch telling Peter that he has a responsibility to not let her toil on Earth and be dragged down by him: “Raelith journeyed across the galaxy to escape misery. Not to be drowned by yours.”

Saying goodbye to Raelith, Glitch, and Symbie would be the right thing to do, probably, but they’ve been fun side characters, even if they’re not crucial to the core throughline (not that there’s much of one, anyway). These characters are remnants of the phenomenal outer space/Hellgate arc from issues #11–19, and perhaps they’re still a part of the story because that arc hasn’t been properly fulfilled yet, with Hellgate licking his wounds after Nial hurled their ship, the Beacon, at him.

Meanwhile, we’re officially only four issues away from Spider-Man’s biggest comic book milestone ever, The Amazing Spider-Man #36 (LGY #1000). The Amazing Spider-Man has been primarily concerned with laying brickwork for this issue, and Raelith still doesn’t seem like that big a part of Peter’s life, even when he’s not thwarting a serial killer, battling a fungi-filled co-worker, or learning that Aunt May and Uncle Ben had a son this whole time.

If their relationship was going to be romantic, the seeds for that romance to blossom probably would have been sprouting from the soil by now. Instead, Peter may forever be in love-life limbo, as far as Spider-Man’s romantic relationships are concerned, with his excuse to meet new women or entertain the idea of meaningless flings sustained by Peter saying that he’s in too fragile a place to make something magical with Raelith last.

The Amazing Spider-Man #33 is scheduled to be released on July 22, 2026.

Spider-Man is the name given to several individuals who have employed a spider-moniker throughout Marvel Comics. Typically gaining their powers through a bite from a radioactive spider, the different Spider-Man heroes employ super-strength, agility, and intellect while utilizing webbing to swing and tangle up their foes. The most notable of these Spider-Men is Peter Parker, who remains one of the most popular superheroes throughout the world.
