For the first time in Marvel history, Daredevil joins a team of dark anti-heroes he had never met face to face. Although Daredevil is often portrayed as a fiercely independent protector of Hell’s Kitchen, Matt Murdock has fought alongside several teams throughout Marvel history. Daredevil has been a member of the New Avengers, the street-level Defenders in several incarnations, the Marvel Knights initiative, and even the Hand. Matt has also been a trusted ally of the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, the X-Men, and countless other Marvel heroes during major crossover events.
Even with his impressive résumé, Daredevil has surprisingly never become a permanent member of several street-level organizations that seem perfectly suited to his talents. Matt has fought beside Heroes for Hire many times but has never officially joined Luke Cage and Iron Fist’s business-minded partnership. Likewise, the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen has stayed outside long-term rosters for groups like the Thunderbolts, and Matt has only interacted with the main Avengers team in the role of associate, not as an official member. His strongest loyalty has always belonged to New York, specifically to Hell’s Kitchen and its people.
While he readily assists larger organizations during exceptional crises, Matt always returns to his neighborhood, where his dual mission as a defender and an attorney is the center of his life. This only highlights how special the situation must be when Daredevil accepts an invitation to join a new team of heroes.
After the living haunted house known as the Mansion Ravenous swallows Marc Spector’s allies, Moon Knight and Clea set out to assemble a new iteration of the Midnight Sons, not picked personally by either hero, but prophesied by Clea’s magic. In Marc Spector: Moon Knight #6, Moon Knight recruits every member one by one, starting with Robbie Reyes, then Blade, and then Daredevil. Each of these anti-heroes is represented by a tarot card, and all of them are secretly entangled in a secondary prophecy that only Clea and Marc Spector know about.
None of Moon Knight’s three recruits took the invitation well at first. Robbie Reyes is still sore over his recent sacrifices within a team, and Blade naturally doesn’t play well with others. However, Daredevil is the Midnight Son who resists the idea the most. Matt Murdock senses Marc Spector’s nervous heartbeats, and he’s wary of what Moon Knight may be planning after the events of Age of Khonshu, where Marc Spector turned against his colleagues for the greater good. It’s only until Moon Knight reveals that his friends are in true danger that Daredevil accepts the invitation reluctantly.
The Midnight Sons have reached a point where long gaps between reunions no longer make sense given the sheer scale of Marvel’s supernatural corner. Earth-616 witnesses numerous paranormal events like vampire wars, demonic invasions, and magical crises that the Sorcerer Supreme and other occult characters can’t fight on their own, yet Marvel’s main supernatural team often disappears for years. Clea and Moon Knight’s decision to assemble a new version of the Midnight Sons now highlights just how valuable the concept is, even though no members of this incarnation were excited about the prospect at first.
The Marvel Universe already treats cosmic emergencies as situations that regularly bring together the Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy, so the supernatural realm would benefit from an equally dependable strike force prepared to respond whenever mystical threats begin to escalate. The Midnight Sons have accumulated enough history and recognizable members to become a more consistent presence. By this point, the team has already featured plenty of big names as official members, including Doctor Strange, Clea, Moon Knight, Blade, Elsa Bloodstone, Werewolf by Night, Man-Thing, Ghost Rider, Wong, Morbius, and now **Daredevil **as well.
