The return to Hogwarts is one that millions are eagerly awaiting, and the HBO series has promised to do two things: return to J.K. Rowling’s original novels, and offer a much bigger and more expansive adaptation than we’ve seen before. And what means some of the visual choices we’ve gotten so used to over decades are not about to change.
HBO has officially revealed the redesigned crests for all four Hogwarts houses — Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw — as part of the annual Back to Hogwarts celebrations and most notably, the new series has finally given Ravenclaw its book-accurate eagle rather than the raven used extensively across the Harry Potter movie franchise.
The new designs are a lot more minimalist than the previous crests associated with Warner Bros.’ previous Harry Potter adaptations. Each has prominently featured its respective animal surrounded by comparatively simple decorative flourishes. The reaction from fans has been mixed, with some criticizing the simplified appearance of the new artwork. However, the Ravenclaw change has brought the television adaptation closer to Rowling’s description of the house in the original books.

Despite its name, Ravenclaw’s animal has always been an eagle in the Harry Potter novels. The house was founded by Rowena Ravenclaw and has traditionally been associated with intelligence, wisdom, wit and a desire for learning. Luna Lovegood, Cho Chang and Gilderoy Lockhart are among its most recognizable members, while Professor Filius Flitwick is the Head of House.
The movies instead popularized a raven as Ravenclaw’s symbol, while also changing the house’s original blue-and-bronze color scheme to blue and silver. The newly revealed design has restored the eagle, offering another indication that HBO intends to pay closer attention to details from the novels. Gryffindor has retained its lion, representing the house associated with Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. Founded by Godric Gryffindor, the house has been associated with bravery, courage and chivalry, and is led by Professor Minerva McGonagall.
Slytherin has once again been represented by a serpent. Founded by Salazar Slytherin, its students have traditionally been associated with ambition, cunning and resourcefulness, with Draco Malfoy, Severus Snape and Tom Riddle among its most famous members. Hufflepuff has retained its badger, with Helga Hufflepuff’s house emphasizing qualities including loyalty, patience and fairness. Cedric Diggory and Newt Scamander have been two of its most prominent characters across the wider franchise, while Professor Pomona Sprout is Head of House.
