The summer season is over, as 2026 is entering the fall period, with multiple films still set to be released. Throughout the last few decades, there have been numerous R-rated movies to dominate Hollywood across different genres, whether it is fantasy, action-thrillers, or intense dramas. Over the years, several installments that got rated R have become some of cinema’s most memorable titles to have ever played on the big screen.

Deadpool & Wolverine, which opened in theaters back in July 2024, became not only Ryan Reynolds’ way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but also the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time. The Phase 5 installment, which brought Hugh Jackman back as a Logan variant, grossed $1.33 billion at the worldwide box office, making it one of the entire Multiverse Saga’s most profitable entries. Their reunion served as a tribute to the late 1990s/2000s Marvel era, with Wesley Snipes’ Blade and Jennifer Garner’s Elektra making their returns.

Years following the Deadpool & Wolverine ending, one of the biggest projects for 2026 became Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, with the British filmmaker bringing his most ambitious film to theaters. Despite Wade Wilson’s third cinematic adventure, which was directed by Shawn Levy - who is set to helm the Ghost Rider reboot for Marvel Studios - making more than a billion after its run, the epic fantasy from The Dark Knight trilogy and Oppenheimer director has surpassed those numbers.

As of writing, The Odyssey has earned more than $1.55 billion, with $568 million being from the domestic market while the other $989.3 million came from international ticket sales. Not only is it Nolan’s most profitable release of all time, but it is also 2026’s second-highest-grossing movie, with Tom Holland’s *Spider-Man: Brand New Day *holding the #1 spot, having made over $2.33 billion worldwide. For the MCU veteran, it is his biggest summer yet, as well as for Zendaya and Jon Bernthal, who starred in both of the summer blockbusters.

Despite the Matt Damon-starring film surpassing the superhero sequel, Deadpool & Wolverine is still performing well in the world of streaming, as it has charted on Disney+. As of writing, it has charted at #7 on the platform in Bolivia, Guyana, Belize, Jamaica, Dominica, Mexico, Peru, Haiti, Suriname, Grenada, and Saint Lucia. Its resurgence could be a result of Jackman and Reynolds’ big moment at D23 2026 during the Marvel Studios presentation, where they were “offering” Kevin Feige to be part of the Avengers: Doomsday cast if they are needed.

It wouldn’t be shocking that many audience members are speculating that it was a hint that the two mutants are somehow in the upcoming ensemble, which has yet to be formally confirmed by Marvel Studios. That may be why many are revisiting their 2024 team-up ahead of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes reuniting in December. Channing Tatum, who was initially set to have his own Gambit project prior to Disney acquiring 20th Century Fox, finally got his chance to portray the famous X-Men hero in Deadpool & Wolverine, and will now be back this fall in the Phase 6 crossover.

Deadpool & Wolverine is available to stream on Disney+.
